FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
- 1. Overview: What Is…?
-
-
- A. What are Jelli stations?
-
From the Tuner page, you can see all the stations available on Jelli. Each station has a catalog of songs and it’s up the community to decide what plays. Click on a station to see what’s currently playing and what artists or bands have recently played, so you can get a feel for what the community on that station is listening to. You can also see how active the station is by looking at the “radioactivity” meter – this is an indicator of how many people are online on that station right now.
To go to a station, click “Tune in”. You’ll be taken to that station’s home page, where you can click “Listen” to hear what’s playing, and start voting and chatting with other listeners to decide what plays next.
You can change stations at any time by clicking on the “Change Station” button in the On Air area from a station’s home page, or click the “Tuner” link at the top of a page to go back to the Tuner to see what’s happening on all the Jelli stations.
-
- B. What is “On Air”?
-
On Air displays what’s currently playing on Jelli. To tune in to Jelli and hear what everyone’s listening to, click the “Listen” button.
As you listen to Jelli, you can voice your opinion about what’s playing using the “Rocks” and “Sucks” buttons. The Jelli rockometer shows what the rest of the listening community thinks about the current track. If you like what you’re hearing, hit “Rocks”, and if enough people think a song sucks, it’ll get pulled it off the air!
If you’re just tuning in, you can also check out what’s been playing by clicking on History. You can see the last 10 plays in the History pop-up, or click “More” to see all the tracks that have played over the past 24 hours.
From the On Air area you can also chat live with other Jelli listeners, share your thoughts about what’s playing and discuss what should play next. You can also jump to other Jelli stations by clicking the “Change Station” button and choosing from the list of available stations.
-
- C. What is “Who’s Next”?
-
Who’s Next is where you help choose what will make it on the air. On Jelli, songs are selected to play based on their score. The scores are determined by the votes and actions of the Jelli community, and the songs with the highest scores will make it on the air.
The three highest scoring tracks are shown at the top of the Who’s Next list, and all the other candidates are ordered by score in the list below. You can browse through the entire Jelli catalog by clicking through the pages in the Who’s Next list, and help shape the playlist by voting for or against each song.
-
- D. What are “Messages”?
- Jelli allows you to exchange messages with other listeners, and to receive messages from Jelli. Unlike chat comments, these messages are sent privately to individual listeners. The Messages box is your inbox, where you can view all the messages you’ve received. You can also compose new messages to other users, or reply to messages you receive from them.

- 2. Listening
-
-
- A. How do I listen to Jelli?
-
We’re working to bring Jelli to the airwaves so you can listen from any radio, but you can listen to Jelli 24/7 from www.jelli.net by clicking “Listen” in the On Air area. Jelli will launch your external media player and start the stream. You can control the playback volume of the Jelli stream using the controls on your media player.
We’ll keep you posted on more ways to tune in as Jelli becomes available on FM.
-
- B. What external media players are supported by Jelli?
-
-
- Windows
-
- Windows Media Player
- Winamp
- Real Player

- iTunes

-
- C. How do I preview tracks on the Jelli website?
-
Currently it’s not possible to preview tracks. We’re working to add this feature, though, so stay tuned!
-
- D. What can I do if I don’t like what’s currently playing?
-
If you’re not a fan of what’s playing, go to the On Air section and hit the “Sucks” button. Your opinion will be registered on the Jelli rockometer, and if enough of the Jelli community agrees with you, the track will be pulled off the air.
You can also jump to other Jelli stations by clicking the “Change Station” button and choosing from the list of available stations.
-
- E. How is the On Air track different from other tracks?
-
The currently playing track is handled differently from other tracks on the Jelli website:
- You use the Rocks/Sucks buttons to let us know what you think of the track (instead of voting on it)
- You cannot apply power-ups to a track that is playing on air
Once the track finishes playing, it becomes eligible for voting again.
-
- F. What happens to a track when it’s done playing on air?
-
Once a track finishes playing on air:
- All votes for that track are cleared (In other words, its score is set to 0)
- All power-ups applied to that track are cleared
- It will show up in the History, so you can see when it played, and whether it got pulled off the air by the Jelli community
Once a track finishes playing, you can immediately vote on it again.
After a song plays, there are cases where Jelli may be temporarily restricted from playing it (or another song from the same album or artist). These restrictions are based on rules such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which prevent us from playing more than a certain number of songs from a particular artist or album in a specified period of time. A blocked track will have a small “blocked” icon on the lower right corner of its album art to show that it’s temporarily unable to be played. However, you can still vote for it, and once the block is lifted it will reappear in the Who’s Next list and be available once again for you to rocket or bomb.
-
- G. What is the character limit for the On Air chat area?
-
Chat comments are limited to 140 characters.
-
-
- 3. Impacting What Will Play
-
-
- A. How do I affect a track’s score?
-
A track’s score is made up of a combination of the votes of all Jelli listeners and any power-ups applied to that track. The highest scoring tracks will make it on the air.
You can register a vote or a power-up anywhere you see an active track.
-
- B. How does voting work?
-
Vote for a track if you want to hear it, or vote against it to try to keep it from playing. After you’ve voted on a track, you can remove your vote by clicking the button again, or you can change your vote by clicking on the opposite vote button.
-
- C. What are power-ups?
-
Power-ups give you more power to affect a track’s score. By using power-ups strategically, in addition to voting on a track, you can exert more significant control over what will play.
Currently, there are two kinds of Jelli power-ups:
- Rockets boost a track to the top of the Who’s Next list, temporarily giving it the best shot at becoming one of the 3 tracks which could play next.
- Bombs destroy a track’s score by clearing everyone else’s votes for that song, and leaving it with an overall score of -1
-
- D. How do I use my power-ups?
-
Roll over any active track to expose the Jelli power panel. From there, click on the rocket or bomb icon to send a track to stardom or blow its score to smithereens.
If a track has already been rocketed, the rocket icon will show up as unavailable, but you can still add your support by voting. Also, power-ups become temporarily disabled when a song is blocked, but voting is always available and you can apply power-ups when the song becomes active again.
-
- E. How many power-ups do I have?
-
Your power-up inventory is posted at the top right section of the Home page near your profile picture. You can also see how many power-ups you have anytime you open the Jelli power panel from an active track.
-
- F. How can I get more power-ups?
To get more power-ups, just keep playing. We’ll award you with more power-ups every day that you login and play. You can use them all at once, or let them accumulate – we’ll let you stockpile up to 5 Bombs and 11 Rockets.
-
-
- 4. Working with Tracks
-
-
- A. What does it mean when a track is “blocked”?
-
At any given time we may be restricted from playing a track due to rules such as those in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. When there are restrictions on a track, it is temporarily marked as “blocked” with an icon on the lower right corner of the album art. While a track is blocked, it is subject to the following limitations:
- It cannot play on air
- It doesn’t show up in the Who’s Next list
- You cannot apply power-ups to it
You can still vote on a track while it is blocked, and its score will reflect voting activity. Once the conditions causing a track to be blocked are removed, the track will become active again, reappear in the Who’s Next list, and be available for getting rocketed or bombed

- 5. Finding Stuff
-
-
- A. What can I search for?
-
You can search for tracks, artists, and other Jelli users. If you know exactly what you’re looking for, you can enter a search term in the search box at the top of any page on Jelli. You can also choose Browse to look through the Jelli catalog and see the full list of artists, tracks, and users in alphabetical order.
-
- B. What if I can’t find a track I’m looking for?
-
If we’re missing your favorite songs, we want to know! We’re at the beginning stages of building Jelli, and always welcome your suggestions on what to add. We update the Jelli catalog regularly based on requests from the Jelli community.
Visit our catalog request forum to add your requests and vote for suggestions from other listeners.

-
- 6. Profile
-
-
- A. What info about me will be seen by other people?
-
When other Jelli users visit your public profile page, they will see your picture, your flair, and any information you’ve entered about yourself in the About area. They’ll also see which Jelli station you were last tuned into in the “Last seen on” area.
Other users do not have access to your private information, such as email address, full name, and zip / postal code.
For more details on privacy, please refer to our Privacy Policy.
-
- B. How will my user name be used on the air?
-
On the air, your user name is like your audio avatar. The Jelli Robot DJs will read your user name to give you credit you for actions you take (such as rocketing a track).
Of course, since they’re robot DJs, they’ll read your user name exactly as it appears. They’ll ignore punctuation, but will read everything else very literally.
For example:
- Lisa_from_the_510 will be read as “Lisa from the five hundred ten”
- e11even will be read as “e eleven even”
If the robot DJs aren’t pronouncing your user name the way you want, you can change your user name by going to your profile page and clicking “Edit Private Account Info”.
-
-
- 7. Messaging
-
-
- A. How can I communicate with other Jelli users?
-
We currently provide two ways to communicate with other users:
- Through the Live Chat feature in the On Air box
- Through the messaging system, accessed from either the Messages box, or another user’s profile page
You can also express yourself to other users by telling them about yourself in the About section of your profile page.
-
- B. How can I send a message to a particular user?
-
You can do this in any of the following ways:
- You can go to a user’s profile page, and click on the “Send Message” button to send a message to that user
- You can reply to any message you get from another user via the “Reply” button on a message
- You can compose a message to any user by clicking the “New” button in the Messages box and entering the user name of the person you want to message
-
-
- 8. Contributing
-
-
- A. How can I contribute to Jelli?
-
We’re big believers that users should be part of the broadcast – not just by determining what plays, but also having their voices heard on Jelli. We’ve set up 1-888-YO-JELLI, where you can leave us your shout-out, Jelli promo, or even a message to T-Bone. T-Bone also pulls material from his Twitter account, so you can drop him a line there and he’ll read his favorite tweets on the air.
We update our audio content regularly, so we hope you’ll contribute your 888-YO-JELLI shout or tweet to T-Bone and be heard on Jelli!
-
- B. I’m an artist; how can I get my music into the Jelli library?
-
Contact us so we can work with you to get your music onto Jelli, for other users to find and rocket you to stardom.
-
- C. What happened to the upload feature?
-
While Jelli is in Alpha, we’re testing many features and making regular updates based on feedback from our users. One of the features we tested in our private Alpha release was the ability to contribute audio messages or text messages that became tracks everyone could vote on to play on the air. We’ve learned a lot from our initial trial of this feature, but have brought it back to the lab until we can build it out and scale more fully to meet our vision for user-contributed content.
There are still many ways you can contribute and have your voice be heard on Jelli. You can holler at T-Bone by calling 1-888-YO-JELLI or visiting him on Twitter, and he’ll incorporate his favorite shouts into Jelli’s ever-changing audio bumpers and promos.
